Would you Wear It? Hot Hats, Couture in the City Fashion Blog

THE BIG DAY! photo
Victoria Beckham (photo source)

Back in the day when every lady-like Fashionista wore hats every day, they were fairly commonplace. Only a very few people today don't consider themselves "dressed" until they have on their hat.

However, it is this humble Fashionista's opinion that hats are slowly creeping back into the mainstream. Whether worn casually like Ashlee or Paris with a tee and jeans or super dressy, like the extreme hat that Victoria Beckham wore to the TomKat wedding, celebs are really embracing the hat look. Then there are some celebs who just don't get it...

DEJA VU photo
Britney Spears (photo source)

It's not the hat itself that irks us, per se, but maybe the color? It's just not very wintery, wait, hold on...

Mary Kate Olsen and Ashlee Simpson (photo source)

See Brit! This is how you do the floppy crochet hat look. Nice try though.

But our celebrity hat award goes to...

Dita von Teese
Dita von Teese (photo source)

Mrs. Manson herself, Dita von Teese works it best in the hat department. It's 40's Glam meets burlesque goth and we love it. Make a hat statement of your own this winter, because it will be a long time before you can work the summer straw hat.

Omiru Poll Results: Shirtdresses are In!
We asked: Are Shirtdresses In or Out?

Nili Lotan Shirt Dress | $475 at Shopbop.

You said: It’s time to shop for shirtdresses. 68% are all over these versatile dresses, and only 12% and 19%, respectively, believe they’re On the Way Out and Out.

Omiru’s take: The perfect workdress, Shirtdresses manage to straddle the line between professional and figure flattering. Not too casual, but not too fussy, Shirtdresses travel effortlessly from the boardroom to cocktails at the local bar. We’re stocking up on both short and long sleeve styles (such as the attention-grabbing mod dress pictured at left) to take us through Winter and Spring! [Omiru]

Shell Shock - Tortoise Shell “it”
Elle spotlights that tortoise shell has resurfaced as the season’s most unexpected accent, turning up on everything from breezy dresses to wedge heels.

For my direct experiences I was completely torn between the Prada sunglasses I bought (the hipster pair I shared) and these Oliver Peoples Varadis 284. The dash of not-too girly pink is so chic! Trust me I was torn between the two but dropping another $300 wasn’t in the budget (insert shopping pang here). read more

Street Chic - Sheer Goes Chic

I don't know about you, but every once in awhile, I find a totally awesome shirt that is, unfortunately, totally sheer - almost see-through sometimes. I usually put these shirts back on the rack, thinking I'll never wear them, but I've found a great example of how to wear a sheer shirt with this stylish look:

I love how the black and white striped shirt peeks through the white top, which is accented by an ornate black pattern - the contrast is amazingly cute - black vs white, stripes vs ornate pattern, etc. Black and white are, of course, always cute together, but the overall outfit just rocks. I believe she said most of the pieces were from Express, so check them out if you likey the outfit. read more

Celeb Reinvention, Couture in the City Fashion Blog

Nicole Richie

Britney Spears
Britney Spears

Ashlee Simpson
Ashlee Simpson

One of the most fun aspects of celebrity style could possibly be their frequent style reinventions. Since the queen bee of reinvention, the one and only Madonna herself, seems to have given up her post as "most frequent style-changer," we would like to feature a few other celebs with ever evolving styles:

1) Nicole Richie: Richie did her change from light locks to dark in a very classy way; she went with a reddish hue for a while before going directly to a chocolate brown. The darker hair gives her a more polished look, and rumor has it that she no longer works with stylist Rachel Zoe.

2) Britney Spears: Brit Brit is almost back to her old self after dropping the baby weight (and that pesky ex-husband dead weight...). While we liked her short, natural bob better than the extensions she's currently rocking, we've got to give her props for ditching the Matt Lauer interview cut off shorts and investing in some flattering grown up frocks.

3) Ashlee Simpson: The once Hot Topic-clad pop-rocker chic is looking more polished than ever, and dare we say, maybe a little classier and more fashionable than big sis Jess? Despite the unnecessary nose job, we are lovin' Ash's new look.

But the fashionista with the most new style changes award goes to....

Gwen Stefani
Gwen Stefani

While Gwen is undoubtedly lookin' hot post-baby, dare we ask what is up with the wig/glasses/assymetrical cut dress? Gwen is by far the biggest style reinventor of our time, and is possibly the only woman alive who can work this look (or pink hair for that matter!) Whether its 50's glam meets rockabilly, ghetto fab or 70's retro-futuristic, Gwen can pull off any look.

Which celeb is best at reinventing styles in your book? What about the ones we listed above? Sound off!

No matter what your religion or what traditions you hold, chances are, there is a holiday event in the near future that you will need to dress for. Whether its a full blow-out gala or just opening presents and eating turkey with family, this is the time of year to treat yourself.

But holiday wear doesn't mean silly looking snowflake sweaters or tons of red and green...if you pick carefully, you can find cute holiday pieces that will carry through to be worn again and again. Look for:

1) Sparkly tops: Cate Blanchett was our muse for this relaxed holiday look. Paired with a cute clutch and jeans, a sparkly gold sweater is just the ticket for holiday get togethers. Bonus: Can also be worn as a winter top for a night out.

The shiny satin at the waist and silver sling backs, and gold clutch add the perfect accesories (note the minimal jewelry!). Bonus: This is also a great look for a wedding or other formal event.

3) Belted tunic tops: A flattering look on any figure, get yours in a holiday color for a fun touch. This top by Ella Moss also comes in cream, and can also be worn to the office, out to dinner...you name it!

Trend Alert: Leg Warmers

Hearts Leg Warmer, $18, available here.

There is perhaps no Winter fashion more fleeting than leg warmers, but that's no reason not to buy a pair! Seriously, these retro cold-weather accessories may be silly, but they are also highly practical for this season's leggings and skinny jeans styles, so why not wear them while they're hot? Just try not to wear your leg warmers at the same time you're sporting a pair of arm warmers. [FabSugar]

Hayden-Harnett Ibiza Convertible Flight Tote

$193 at Hayden-Harnett.
Ben Harnett was inspired by a WWII Helmet Bag, which evolved in a spell of 3am creativity into a bag that does more than double duty.

What to pair the bag with? According to Harnett, the versatile tote goes with anything and everything–from sweats to YSL.

Something you didn’t know about Hayden-Harnett? The company was started on April Fool’s day by two hardworking people and a slightly less hardworking cat. But they’re no joke.

Classy Chic - My Fave Style

Ok lovelies, so I was reading through my blog and realized that I haven't been doing nearly the number of posts I used to do with pictures of my outfit. That was one of the main things I wanted to blog about...not for me, but just b/c I find looking at how people put outfits together fascinating, and it always inspires me to put new outfits together when I see unusual combinations...guess I just figured other people may feel the same.

Anywho, yesterday I wore an almost 100% Banana Republic outfit. I am so loving this store and its style in my post-college, semi-professional life. BR usually features classic lines with a modern twist...right up my alley these days.

I shopped BR's sale last week and found this fab white, tuxedo style shirt with loose ties, which are fun tied up or worn loosely. I also got a merino wool sweater in gray, which I paired with the tuxedo shirt for my semi-dressy/semi-casual Monday work outfit. I also have on BR jeans and vintage Ferragamo, patent leather, black, peep-toe pumps to give the outfit a little kick...hehe...kick...get it?

Holiday Chic: Satin Lace-Up Bruno Frisoni Shoes

Satin lace-up Bruno Frisoni shoes $825 via Saks

Ooh la love.

Giuseppe Zanotti may be my Italiano lover, but Bruno Frisoni is my Parisian boy.

Taking me to holiday cocktail parties, Bruno Frisoni has me watch my walk in his 4½” stiletto, Bruno Frisoni keeps me on my toes with his phat platform, Bruno Frisoni’s lace-up shoe is deliciously selective, unlike Mr. Madden’s and Monsieur Louboutin’s peeptoe.

And unlike Mr. Man who’s been peeping at all the ladies tonight. Tah-tah, doll. Laced-up tight with Bruno, Frisoni’ll make it easy to glide away.
